The entire Amalfi Coast is absolutely breathtaking. If you’re looking to travel to this area, you have probably heard of Positano, Italy. Positano is popular for obvious reasons! If you are into taking the perfect pictures for Instagram, you will never run out of beautiful photo ops here! While many people visit Positano for a day or two, I spent four nights here and still did not want to leave! I have suggestions for where to eat, what memorable activities are worth the money, and some travel tips to make your trip run more smoothly.
What to Do in Positano
You can’t go to Positano without having a beach day… The Spiaggia Grande Beach is at the base of the colorful buildings. There is a high chance that you have seen this beautiful beach in a magazine or all over . You will see the beach right when you get off the ferry. Spiaggia Grande Beach is free, but the sunbeds cost a few euros.
If you want a quieter beach that is a bit less busy, you can walk along a coastal path from Spiaggia Grande Beach to find Fornillo Beach. The walk is beautiful, the water is clear, and the bright sun umbrellas make for pretty pictures.
Positano’s downtown area is incredible as well! Enjoy a few hours or a full-day shopping and taking in the views. There are a couple stores that sell everything lemon-related. You can buy limoncello, lemon candies, lemon soap, and any other lemon souvenir you can think of!
If you have time for a day excursion, I would suggest talking with the people in the tents that are advertising excursions near the ferry port. I went on a day-long boat excursion that took a small group of people to see the blue grotto caves, spend a few hours on the island of Capri, and swim while enjoying wine.
I would certainly recommend this package. It only costs about $120 USD per person. This excursion was a highlight of my trip. I went during the hot heat of summertime, so a day on a boat can not be beaten!
Where to Eat in Positano
I did not have one bad meal in Positano, so expect some spectacular food. I will say that most people have reservations for dinnertime, so keep this in mind. Although I was able to get into most restaurants without a reservation, there are select spots that only allow people with reservations to eat. I would recommend walking around and seeing what restaurants catch your attention by the smell of the food or the environment of the restaurant. Two of my favorite restaurants were Ristorante Bruno and Le Tre Sorelle dal 1953.
When in Positano, you have to try a lemon dessert! You can find delicious desserts all over, but I loved what Positano Paradise Lounge Bar had to offer. I enjoyed my fancy lemon cake and the refreshing lemon sorbet that was served in a lemon.
Travel Tips
Finding budget-friendly accommodations can be difficult in Positano, but there are some great Airbnbs. I stayed in an Airbnb in Montepertuso, which is about 10 minutes up from the mainland by bus. There are stairs that go all the way up from the mainland. I used the stairs to go downtown several times, but if you decide to hike straight up, you can expect to take at least an hour.
The height of this city is no joke. The views up top are beautiful and you can work on those calf muscles and burn off the pasta calories, but if you or anybody going along has trouble walking, you will want to pay more to stay closer to the water.
There are buses that consistently run around Positano, but they are crammed with people and wind back and forth on the narrow streets. It’s part of the experience, but don’t expect a short and sweet ride on a coach bus. You can buy a bus pass at certain stores downtown or you can pay cash. It is about two or three euros to take the bus one-way. Transportation can be stressful when traveling, but figuring out the transportation system in Positano is certainly worth it.
Positano is a dream location, so make your dream a reality! Cheers to new experiences and making connections around the world!
