Top Sights in Rome

Calling all history lovers! If you want to see the ancient remains that scream power and prestige throughout history, then take a walk through Rome. There is plenty to see in Rome, so I recommend planning your order of activities in advance.

Rome is bursting with incredible historical sights. If you are walking down a narrow road in the center of Rome, there is a high chance of you stumbling upon a grand plaza or a giant, significant piece of architecture. Here are some top sights that I made sure to see when I visited Rome.

The Roman Colosseum

Roman Colosseum

When you see the true size of the Colosseum in person, you will be amazed. The Colosseum is extremely well known because of its significance throughout history. It is the largest amphitheater that has ever been built. The remains are still jaw dropping. You can tour the inside of the amphitheater if you wish, but if you visit in the summer, don’t expect to be able to simply walk in after arrival. You need a reservation to tour the Colosseum, and the tickets often sell out. If you are determining if tours are usually worth the money in Rome, consider checking out the blog written by Sean Finelli called Are Tours In Rome Worth It.

The Trevi Fountain in Rome

Trevi Fountain in Rome

The Trevi Fountain may be the most popular fountain in Italy. Many people throw coins into the fountain, because the word around town says if you throw the coin over your left shoulder, you will have good luck and will be able to return to Italy in the future. Even if you have seen pictures of the Trevi Fountain or have seen the fountain in the famous scene from the movie, “La Dolce Vita”, you will still be impressed when seeing this piece of art in person.

The Pantheon in Rome

The incredible historical sights continue… You can admire the architecture of the Pantheon from the outside, or if you would prefer to tour the early Roman temple, you can pay to explore the inside. If you choose to do the walk-through tour, expect a wait time as there can be fairly long lines.

Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona in Rome

This plaza is the perfect location to spend a bit of extra time at. Piazza Navona is a beautiful and open space that was primarily used as a stadium for athletic competitions. You can find more historical statues and fountains here. If you visit Rome on a hot summer day like I did, I recommend grabbing a refreshing beverage at a nearby shop and finding a bench to relax on after all of the walking. I enjoyed a fancy lemon slushie while I was here.

Vatican City

Vatican City – St. Peter’s Basilica

You have probably heard of Vatican City, since the Pope lives here. Vatican City is a city-state which is surrounded by Rome. If you find yourself here, there is a chance that you may find the Pope waving on the balcony. Unfortunately, I was not here at the right time, but maybe you will time it right! You should expect to walk around a lot here. It is a beautiful area where you will find more iconic architecture such as St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.

I hope you find the time to travel and marvel at these historical sights while they still remain. Cheers to new experiences and making connections around the world!
