Weekend Getaway to Hilton Head, South Carolina

Whether you are an avid golfer, looking for an ocean escape, or need a relaxing vacation where you can be on island time, Hilton Head is a wonderful destination to explore. Hilton Head is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway or a week-long trip. If a vacation to Hilton Head is in your future, keep reading for my favorite activities and places to add to your itinerary.

Harbour Town

Harbour Town in Hilton Head

Harbour Town is a must-see location when you are on the island. This area is located within Sea Pines Resort. There is a $10 fee per car to enter Harbour Town for the day, but it is worth the money without any hesitation.

Harbour Town is where you can walk the pier, find the iconic lighthouse, shop at cute souvenir shops and boutiques, and find several restaurants to indulge in. Along the pier, there are several excursion companies such as boat tour companies and jet ski rentals if you are looking to get out on the water. Quarter Deck is a fancy and beautiful waterfront restaurant that is perfect for any date night. I visited Harbour Town Bakery & Cafe for brunch my first morning and enjoyed their french toast with seasonal fruit.

Harbour Town Bakery & Cafe

The Salty Dog Cafe is a popular waterfront restaurant that I recommend within Harbour Town. My husband and I split the insane Jake-Zilla burger for lunch. The Jake-Zilla burger consists of a half-pound burger patty topped with bacon, pulled pork, pimento cheese, fried onions, the works, and barbecue sauce on a pretzel bun with a hushpuppy and pickle spear on top! The burger came with a side of french fries as well. Clearly, it was enough tasty food to split among two people!

Bike around Hilton Head

Hilton Head is a big biking community which I love! We brought our bikes up to the island, but there are countless bike rental companies you can find scattered around the island if you need to borrow some bikes. Personally, I think Harbour Town is the perfect spot for biking around. Sea Pines Resort has a map with their leisure bike trails to enjoy during your time in Harbour Town. Biking near the lighthouse and around the marina, through their stunning neighborhoods, and along their biking trails makes for a great day of biking!

Biking Hilton Head Island

See the PGA TOUR Harbour Town Golf Links course

Harbour Town Golf Links

For the golf lovers out there, Harbour Town in Hilton Head is home to one of the famous courses on the PGA TOUR. The course is named Harbour Town Golf Links. If you do happen to be biking in Harbour Town, the course is a very short bike ride from the lighthouse. Even if you aren’t paying to golf there, you can enjoy the stunning views of the course and driving range, explore the clubhouse, and purchase products from their pro shop.

Go golfing

Golfing on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head houses over 26 golf courses. You see pristine courses on your left and right as you drive around the island, so if you enjoy playing golf, when on Hilton Head island… I went golfing at a course that was inland just off the island that was called The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes. We were looking for a budget-friendly price and found that on their website. We were able to book 9-holes at 10:20 AM for $31 per person here. The grounds were very nice! I would recommend this golf course, but of course, you have plenty of options to research and choose from!

Coligny Beach Park and Plaza

Coligny Beach Park and Plaza

Coligny Beach is a popular beach to visit for your beach days on Hilton Head island. The Coligny Beach Plaza is a short walk from the beach with blocks of big-brand stores, quaint local boutiques, and various restaurants. It is set up like an outlet mall, but if you are wondering what to do on a rainy day, you may still consider Coligny Beach Plaza as most of the area is covered as you walk from store to store.

Tiki Hut

If Hilton Head is your vacation destination, head to Tiki Hut for all the vacation vibes! Tiki Hut is an outdoor bar and restaurant under a giant palapa that offers live music throughout the day and night. I recommend the delicious Banana Colada and Lava Flow cocktails. I happily spent about six hours hear enjoying the drinks and talented live bands.

Barnacle Brews Coffee on Hilton Head

If you are a coffee connoisseur like me who enjoys fancy lattes and aesthetic coffee shops, Barnacle Brews Coffee is a unique coffee shop for you to visit. Visit their Instagram page to get a feel for the fun vibes. Barnacle Brews Coffee serves their specialty drinks out of an Airstream trailer with cute summer island decor such as the drink menu being written on a yellow surfboard. Barnacle Brews offers outdoor seating only, so this may not be the cozy coffee shop you are looking for on a rainy day, but this bright and happy coffee shop is certainly the spot to be to start your sunny morning on any other given day! We waited in line for about 10 minutes before ordering, so the secret is out amongst locals and tourists alike.

Skull Creek

Skull Creek

Skull Creek is a popular location for watching the sunset in the evening. Visiting Skull Creek will likely have you visiting a new part of the island as it is not located within the popular touristy spots. The drive through this area is more rustic with more humble homes and a more rural feel. Consider watching the sunset at Skull Creek Dock or after eating dinner at Skull Creek Boathouse or Skull Creek Dockside Restaurant.

Coco’s on the Beach

Coco’s on the Beach is one other restaurant that is highlighted frequently on Instagram. I wanted to mention Coco’s on the Beach in my blog since we came here for dinner one night, but we did have mixed reviews on this restaurant. Coco’s on the Beach is an ocean-front restaurant bringing bright island vibes. Most people bike or walk to the beach and then walk up to the restaurant from the beach, so if you are visiting with a car, it is difficult to locate. Our GPS brought us through a stunning ocean-front neighborhood with colorful expensive homes, but it ultimately led to a dead-end that did not bring us to the restaurant. Coco’s on the Beach is associated with the Hilton Head resort, so you have to pay a $5 resort parking fee (that can be reimbursed by the restaurant) in order to walk to the restaurant.

Coco's on the Beach - Hilton Head

It is a very laidback restaurant, so expect to be flexible when visiting. For example, we arrived at 6:00 PM and thought they were not serving food, since their menus said “kitchen closes at 6:00 PM”, but the employee then told me their kitchen was open until 7:45 PM. The prices were very different from the prices on their website, and many of the meal options were not actually available when we were there. My chicken sandwich was tasty, but it didn’t come with a side and didn’t end up being very budget-friendly. Personally, I think Coco’s on the Beach is a good spot for a quick lunch if you are looking for food during your beach day, but it is not the best restaurant for a dinner date night.

Conclusion

I hope some of my Hilton Head weekend getaway itinerary items inspire you during your trip planning! Hilton Head is a great destination for active excursions, listening to live music, and relaxing by the ocean!
